If scoring an ATAR equivalent of 99.5% wasn’t a big enough achievement, Goulburn’s Courtney Macpherson has now been named TAFE Illawarra’s Foundation Education Student of the Year.
The award confirms the 23-year-old’s status as one of the top TAFE students across South Eastern NSW for her studies in the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation.
Courtney is now studying a double degree in Law and Medicine at the Australian National University. She’s recently started specialising in forensic anthropology.
With all of her success, it’s hard to believe there was a time when she almost stopped chasing her dreams.
“Before I went to TAFE, I almost gave up on my goal to work in the medical field. I never thought I could achieve the results I needed,” she says.
“A lot of people don’t realise the opportunities you get from going to TAFE. I was one of those people.
“I never knew I could get an ATAR by studying at TAFE, let alone achieve the result I did.”
Courtney says the Tertiary Preparation course not only granted her entry to university, it’s given her the skills to succeed in her degree.
“The TPC gets you thinking at a more critical level than you do at school. It prepares for you for the style of writing you need for assessments. I wouldn’t be where I am now without it.”
Courtney’s advice to others who think it’s not possible to do something they love?
“Just go for it. It’s worth it.”
Courtney is now encouraging the community to explore their study options and enrol in a course that could change their lives at Choices Day on Saturday 4 June, 9am to 12pm, at TAFE Illawarra’s Goulburn and Moss Vale campuses. You can find more locations on our Choices Day event page.
Choices Day is great way for people to seek career advice from TAFE Illawarra’s expert staff, get helpful information on how to study now, pay later with VET FEE-HELP student loans and see if they are eligible for fee-free study options.
There will be information on options to get qualified faster and at a lower cost with Recognition of Prior Learning. Visitors to Choices Day can also get assistance with creating a USI (Unique Student Identifier), which all future students must have before enrolling.
Enrolments for Semester 2, 2016 open on Saturday 4 June. You can search for your dream course with our Course Search tool or call 1300 766 123.
