Bega’s Madeline Newton wins major TAFE Illawarra award

After placing second in the state for her Tourism HSC studies, Bega’s Madeline Newton’s success is continuing as TAFE Illawarra’s Vocational Student of the Year.

Madeline is now based in Airlie Beach, working and volunteering for a variety of organisations thanks to her Tourism qualification from TAFE Illawarra Bega’s TAFE While at School (TVET) program.

Flying down from her new role in the Whitsundays to accept the prestigious award, Madeline says she was a blown away upon hearing the news.

“I could not have done it without my supportive and amazing teacher, Debbie,” says Madeline.

“The TVET course allowed me to walk out of school with my Certificate III in Tourism and straight into job opportunities.

“Employers are so impressed that I have a tourism qualification, work experience in tour operations with national and international cruise liners, as well as being a multi award winner, all by the age of 18.”

This experience landed Madeline a job sailing the northern bays of the Whitsunday Islands, with Tall Ship Adventures on the impressive Derwent Hunter ship.

“The TVET course has opened up so many opportunities. I’ve also been offered the chance to join the Whitsundays Reef Festival organising committee, and next year I will be heading to Canberra University to study Sport Management and Tourism and Events Management.

“My advice to anyone considering doing a TVET course is just go for it! It has given me more freedom and choices.

“It’s so different to school. I love the way you get to implement the theory in practical activities and work placement.

“You walk out of school, work ready.”

Enrolments are now open for Semester 2, 2016 at TAFE Illawarra Bega. To explore courses on offer and enrol, visit or call 1300 766 123.
