Mark Cole’s passion for hairdressing spans more than 38 years. The Mittagong local and Head Teacher at TAFE Illawarra Moss Vale is now turning his skills with the scissors into an exciting first for the Highlands region, establishing a new training partnership with local salon Crimpers.
In consultation with Crimpers salon owner Jo Templr, Mark is delivering on-site training in a range of fee-free short courses which are designed to upskill employees. The training is subsidised by the NSW Government.
“I’ve been working with Jo for years by training her apprentices, so this new training is a natural extension of our existing relationship – and it’s one we’re both passionate about as it’s for the betterment of our local industry.
“After determining Jo’s needs, I’m delivering short skill set courses in Dry Hair to Shape, Apply Braiding Techniques and Greet and Prepare Clients for Salon Services.”
Crimpers owner Jo Templr originally did her apprenticeship through TAFE Illawarra Goulburn and says she’s thrilled to be part of the first training of this kind in the region.
“I’ve been working in the industry for more than 30 years and this is the first time on-site hairdressing training has been delivered in the Highlands. It’s a sign of the strength and growth we’re seeing in the local industry.
“I’ve owned this salon for 22 years and it’s never been busier,” says Jo.
Jo also says the in-salon training is providing her with the flexibility she requires to balance the demands of running a business with her needs for continual professional development.
“I’m always keen to keep my staff up-to-date with the latest techniques and trends so we can keep delivering a quality service.
“On a personal level, when you’re running a business you spend less time on the floor working with clients, so the in-house training gives me an opportunity to keep on top of my trade.”
Mark says he’s also looking to run courses in the future that are designed to attract the next generation of hairdressers.
“I first got my foot in the door through a work placement opportunity when I was in Year 9 with Scissors salon in Sydney,” says Mark.
“I then went on to purchase and run the salon myself, so I really understand the value of being given an opportunity. That’s why I’m always looking for ways to give young people a chance to get into the industry.
“I’m hoping to run pre-apprenticeship courses at Crimpers salon to give young people a taste of what it’s like in the industry. There’s no better way to do that than in a real salon environment.”
