What is TVET?

If you’re interested in gaining practical work skills and a TAFE NSW qualification while you complete your HSC, TVET is the way to go!

What is TVET?

TVET is Externally delivered Vocational and Education Training for Year 10, 11 and 12 school students. TAFE NSW is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that delivers courses to students as part of their Higher School Certificate (HSC). Students who meet the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements for the course will gain units of credit towards their HSC as well as a nationally recognised TAFE NSW qualification.

TVET allows you to:

  • gain practical, work-related skills to enhance your future employment opportunities
  • complete units that count towards your Higher School Certificate (HSC)
  • start or complete a nationally-recognised TAFE NSW qualification while still at school

When you finish your TVET course you'll receive a nationally-accredited Certificate qualification or a Statement of Attainment. Most TVET courses articulate into further TAFE NSW or university studies.

How is TAFE NSW different from school?

TAFE NSW offers an adult learning environment where you are encouraged to be self-directed, self-motivated and are expected to take responsibility for your own learning progress. You will also need to show commitment, both in terms of attendance and attitude and a willingness to become fully involved in the learning process.

How will a TAFE NSW course benefit me?

As TVET courses are designed to pathway into higher level TAFE NSW courses, you may be granted credit transfer for unit/s of competency successfully completed.

Industry recognises the quality of TAFE NSW trained workers. This means your TVET course is incredibly powerful when you would like to enter the workforce.

A TAFE NSW qualification can also be a pathway to university as TAFE NSW has hundreds of arrangements with Australian Higher Education providers that may reduce the time required for you to achieve a higher education qualification.

Will I get a TAFE NSW certificate at the end of my course?

At the end of your TVET course, you may receive two sets of credentials.

If you meet the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)  HSC requirements, your TVET course will be included on your HSC Certificate. If you meet the TAFE NSW requirements you will receive a TAFE NSW qualification or Statement of Attainment.
